UpBeat NYC is a free music program based in the South Bronx. Inspired by El Sistema, Venezuela's music education system, UpBeat NYC uses the pursuit of musical excellence and ensemble performance to bring about positive changes in the lives of local children.
UpBeat NYC is currently looking for volunteer assistant teachers of violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, flute, trumpet, french horn trombone, tuba and percussion. Applicants should be proficient on their instrument(s), have great enthusiasm for working with energetic young people and teaching music, and be able to commit to at least one weekday evening per week (more details below).
Potential assistant teachers do not need to have prior teaching experience, although this is very helpful. Positions for both experienced and novice teachers are available.
The music program is structured in three session (Fall 12 weeks, Spring 22 weeks and Summer 2 weeks) each culminating in at least one concert performance. Each week students have one private lesson, sectional practice (often with the same teacher), and at least one large ensemble rehearsal. Although this is a voluntary position, we ask that teachers commit to at least one regular teaching slot a week for at least one full session. This provides the consistency and stability that our participants need.
This is an ideal opportunity for music students, recent graduates and musicians to build experience and develop their teaching in a fun and dynamic environment, all the while meeting a very real need.
UpBeat conducts a full background check for all potential volunteers.
Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Spanish a plus.
