Ashley is now 20 years old but she started at UpBeat when she was just 7, in our very first paper violin class. It’s been an honor to grow and learn alongside Ashley – remembering her sweet smiles when she was little and her mom telling us about their walks home after class when Ashley would share how excited she was about becoming a musician – and now, seeing her play in UpBeat’s most advanced string orchestra, teach the next generation and pursue her dreams in college and beyond. “Thirteen years ago, my mom enrolled me at UpBeat. I was a very shy little girl, and joining a music program wasn’t something I would have chosen for myself—especially since she signed me up without telling me first. But from my very first class, everything changed. I remember how exciting it felt to hold my instrument, learn something completely new, and realize I was part of a community that truly believed in me. By the end of that first day, I was so grateful my mom had taken that leap for me.
Being at UpBeat helped me come out of my shell in ways I never expected.”
Over the years, it became more than just a music program; it became a community that built my confidence, challenged me to grow, and surrounded me with mentors who believed in me.
“UpBeat played a transformative role in my life, helping me grow both personally and musically, and giving me a sense of belonging that shaped who I am today.
Now, I am pursuing my master’s degree in social work, and I have the privilege of giving back to the same community that gave me so much. As an UpBeat intern, I support staff and work closely with younger students, helping guide them through the early stages of their own musical journeys—much like the mentors once did for me.
The values I carry with me—empathy, advocacy, and a deep commitment to supporting others—come directly from my experiences at UpBeat. I am also incredibly grateful to receive a college scholarship through UpBeat, which has helped cover my educational expenses and made this journey possible.
