Join us this Saturday September 16th for the 30th Anniversary of Movimiento La Peña del Bronx - as many of you know La Peña founders are our Uncle Victor Toro and Aunt Nieves Ayress - two Chilean refugees and former political prisoners who arrived here in the early 80s. They didn't skip a beat with their political work- right away they took over an empty space and turned into La Peña. It became not only an organizing space but it was the site for some old school HipHop shows, a rehearsal and performance space for Spanish rock groups, Punk bands, Bomba and Plena groups, For the Garifuna and Dominican communities etc - they gave an importance to culture as they knew it was key to organizing- they recognized their work here in The Bronx as no different then their work in Chile - without La Peña there is no Rebel Diaz - they taught us how to run community spaces and gave us our 1st sound system when we were doing shows at The Rock Garden in 2005/06 - they encouraged us to lead and do the work and start the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective (RDACBX) - so we ask with much love that y'all join us in honoring this great organization! It's going down at Brook Park in The South Bronx - it all starts at 2pm - there's gonna be amazing live performances and it's FREE!!
